Southland Hospital Board FIRST MEETING SINCE ELECTIONS The first meeting of the Southland Hospital Board since the local body elections was held yesterday. It was explained by the secretary (Mr T. Pryde) that Mr T. Golden would continue to hold office of chairman until the statutory meeting of the board next month. Mr Golden extended a welcome to the new members, especially to Miss H. Hunt, a representative of the Wallace district, and. expressed pleasure that Mr G. A. Wraytt, a former member, had been returned to the board. It was gratifying, he added, that all the members who sought re-election had been returned. He also congratulated Mr John Miller on the big vote he had received in the hospital board elections. There were present at the meeting: Mr T. Golden (chairman), Miss H. L. Birss, Mrs A. Henderson, Miss H. L. Hunt, Messrs W. Clark, J. S. A. McDougall, A. McKenzie, J. W. Miller, John Miller, A. T. Newman, ,W. M. Norman, J. H. Smith, F. Trapski, G. A. Wraytt and Dr J. A. Pottinger. Reports from medical superintendents and hospital matrons in the board’s district were read and discussed. The medical superintendent at the Southland Hospital (Dr L. C. McNickle) reported that 120 patients remained in the hospital at March 31 and 203 were admitted during April. During the month 204 patients were discharged and five died. At April 30, 114 patients remained in the hospital. The individual days’ stay was 103.86 and the average number of patients a day was 111.83. The matron at the Southland Hospital (Miss J. Ross) acknowledged the following donations for April: Toe H, Mrs Matherson, Mrs McKenzie, Mrs Schroeder, Mrs Gresson, Mrs Frew, Miss Murphy and Mr Davenport (gifts of books); Mr R. Hosie (books and flowers); Mr Fraser (books and fruit); Mr A. Wachner (flowers); Red Cross Society (fruit); Southland Club (playing cards); Mrs Little (magazines) and Mrs Flaus (comics). DONATION OF BOOKS Miss Ross mentioned in her report that Mr R. Hosie, a land agent of Invercargill, had presented to the nurses’ library a set of 20 bound volumes of the works of Charles Dickens. The gift was much appreciated by the staff. The medical superintendent at the Gore Hospital (Dr J. E. Rogers) reported that 36 patients remained in the hospital at April 1 and 67 were admitted during the month. Sixty-six patients were discharged during the month, and two died. At May 1, 35 patients remained in the hospital. There were 34 operations and 117 out-patient attendances during the month. The matron at the Gore Hospital (Miss V. A. Fox) acknowledged the following donations for April: Miss E. Gibbs, Gore, Mrs J. Denniston, Women’s Club, Gore (magazines); Mrs Ferguson, Mataura (flowers) and Mrs A. Duncan (books). The medical superintendent at the Riverton Hospital (Dr E. S. Fossey) stated in his report that 31 patients remained in the hospital at April 1 and 43 were admitted during the month. In April, 33 patients were discharged and five died. At May 1, 36 patients remained in the hospital. There were 48 out-patient attendances during the month and 28 operations. The medical superintendent at the Lake County Hospital (Dr W. A. Anderson) reported that 11 patients remained in the hospital at April 1 and 13 were admitted during the month. In April 11 patients were discharged and two died. At May 1, 11 patients remained in the hospital. There were 11 out-patients attendances and four operations during the month. The matron at the Invercargill Infirmary (Miss C. M. Fitzgibbon) reported that 109 patients (67 males and 42 females) remained in the infirmary at April 1 and seven males and 12 1 females were admitted during the month. In April, 6 males and seven females were discharged and seven males and four females died. At May 1, 61 males and 43 females remained in the hospital. The following donations were acknowledged: Mrs Macpherson (clothing); Mr Creeser (books) and the Rev. J. A. Thomson (flowers).
