EASTERN/NORTHERN COMPETITION ALBION TEAM UNBEATEN By FULL-BACK With two more matches to play to finish of the first round of the EasternNorthern Rugby football senior competition, Albion is the only team that has not been beaten. Mataura, Country Pirates and Pioneer have all been beaten once, Pioneer also having played one drawn game, and Lumsden has had two defeats and one draw. Balfour has not yet won a game. Albion scored a surprisingly easy win over Country Pirates at Gore last Saturday. The latter team was considered the best of the Northern District teams. Although the score was only three points to nil at half-time, Albion broke through the Pirates team’s defence in the dying stages of the game to win by 16 points to nil. B. Herron (Albion) played an outstanding game in the forwards, and if he continues to show the form he has been displaying this season he must be considered for a place in the Southland team. For a heavy forward Herron is unusually fast and one of the tries he scored on Saturday would have done credit to a fast
wing three-quarter. He secured the ball in a line-out at about mid-field and, breaking through, he outpaced the opposition, swerved past the full-back to score. It was a splendid effort and not just a flash in the pan, because a few minutes later he opened up another similar movement, backed up by Southern and Graham, which eventually resulted in a try. It was thought that Southern had retired from the game this season, but after standing on the side-line for two Saturdays he decided to turn out and played a very sound game. Albion has discovered a sound goalkicker in Clark, who, it is understood, comes from Invercargill. This player converted two tries on Saturday with well-judged kicks and he also showed good judgment when kicking into touch. Pioneer appears to- have slumped rather badly this season and has not met with the success expected of it. Its game against Albion tomorrow should be very interesting, because in a friendly match at the beginning of the season it had an easy win over the competition leaders. If the day is fine the spectators should be treated to a fast display, because, although Pioneer is noted for its speedy backs, Albion also has produced a fast back line this season.
A veteran made his appearance in the ranks of the Mataura team in its first match against Balfour at Balfour last Saturday. He was L. G. Townsend, the well-known captain of the Eastern Southland cricket team, and one time Southland, Otago and Eastern Southland representative player. Townsend was a noted five-eighth and it is understood he was the “brains” of the Mataura team on Saturday. What’ he lacked in fitness, he made up for in cleverness in. out-manoeuvring the opposition. Five players by the name of Soper took part in the Albion-Country Pirates match last Saturday. Four of these were included in the Country Pirates team, and Soper, the Albion forward, made up the fifth. The Pirates team included a number of young players and although it was beaten by a big margin of points it was by no means disgraced. It showed good combination in both forward and back lines, and it is thought that more will be heard of this team in the second round.
Although Lumsden has not yet had a win it has a fairly well balanced side and was only beaten by a small margin of points by both Albion and Country Pirates. A fair indication of its strength was given last Saturday when it played Pioneer to a draw. All its matches so far have been played at home and it will make its first appearance in Eastern Southland tomorrow when it will play Mataura at Mataura. Balfour is the only team that has not scored any points at all, having been beaten by Albion, Pioneer and Mataura by good margins. This team has a good set of forwards and when its backs learn to send out better passes it can expect to meet with more success. In the matches it has played to date it has lost many points through dropped passes. In the junior grade Wyndham is leading with six points. It was beaten by Albion in the second match of the round but a protest against the latter team for playing two players without transfers from another club was upheld by the sub-union, the game being awarded to Wyndham. Mataura is the next team with four points. At a meeting of the sub-union this week Mr J. M„ Boyne reported that be - cause of a number of injured players High School would be forced to withdraw from the third grade competition. He inquired if it was possible for the school to draw on Pioneer players who were unable to secure a game because of that club having no third grade team. This suggestion was supported by the chairman (Mr J. W. Aitken), who stated that it would assist to keep the the Pioneer players in the game. It was decided to give High School permission to draw on the Pioneer Club for third grade players, providing that the names of the players were submitted to the sub-union. ,
The sub-union has decided to try to arrange representative matches against the North Otago Union team and a team from the Otago University at the end of the season. The position of the teams in the Eastern-Northern senior competition are as follows:—
