NIGHTCALM WINS WELL

SOUTHLAND HORSES UNPLACED LAST POST SHAPES WELL IN HURDLES (Special to The Times) TIMARU, May 19. Courtyard and Grampian carried exactly the same amount of money in the Levels Hurdles Handicap, for which The Surgeon was third selection. Scrap led Last Post and Grampian to the first hurdle where Sunny Comet lost his rider. As they turned into the back Courtyard and Scrap were carrying on from Sir Rosenor, Last Post and The Surgeon. The Surgeon was almost on terms with Courtyard at the last jump but the last-named beat him off in the rim home and won by nearly two lengths. Haulbowline was about four lengths away just in front of Superex. Then came Last Post, Sir Rosenor and Fireguard. Scratchings reduced the field in the Claremont Handicap to nineteen. Cocksure drew No. 14 but his Ashburton form induced backers to make him a pronounced favourite. Mazamarch broke through the barrier and Shamfight assisted in delaying the start. Birch Boy and Gilford got away badly. Cocksure began quietly but Mazamarch soon took the lead from Cocksure, Lockit, Palmyra and Silver Slipper and racing round the top Mazamarch and Silver Slipper were out clear of Cocksure and Thermidor with Great Memory, Astaire and Flame Queen also prominent. Thermidor ran to the front a furlong from home but Astaire finished fast and got up to win in the last stride by a head. Silver Slipper was two lengths away just beating Lockit, Cocksure and Flame Queen, who were in line in front of Great Memory.

UNWIELDY FIELD Twenty-three starters, twenty-one of which were on the limit, overcrowded the track in the Opihi Trot and there was a mix-up at the start. The two back-markers, Privateer and Sylvie’s Best, took no part in the race while Grand Slam had a wheel buckled and Boreas was interfered with, Worthy Empress, Rowi and Glenholme were others which struck trouble at the start. Guncase and Devotion soon took command from Aidershot, Lady Vasclyne, Pecunia and Scenic Gem and when the far turn was reached Guncase and Devotion were several lengths ahead of Aidershot, Lady Vasclyne, Scenic Gem and Wee Truman. Devotion ran wide at the home turn leaving Guncase with a substantial lead and he ran home an easy winner from Devotion. The two-year-old Aidershot was about four lengths away just beating Wee Truman. For the Timaru Cup, which attracted the best-class field for years, backers selected Willie Win (460-376), Studley Royal (299-349), Rebel Lad (255-312) and Wild Career (182-264). Davolo was chopped out at the start and Silver Sight began slowly. Passing the winning post the first time Pelmet was leading from Mungatoon, Wild Career and Royal Gallant and at the mile post Royal Gallant and Pelmet held command from Mungatoon, Wild Career and Rebel Lad, Silver Sight and Davolo being at the tail of the field. Mungatoon and Royal Gallant led at the far turn from Pelmet and Rebel Lad, who were closely attended by Wild Career, Willie Win and Studley Royal. Crossing the top Mungatoon went away with Rebel Lad, Pelmet, Silver Ring, Wild Career and Willie Win in pursuit. Last Refrain travelled fast round the home bend and when the straight was reached Mungatoon, Rebel Lad and Last Refrain had a good advantage. Mungatoon came away to win by nearly three lengths from Last Refrain, with Davolo t.wo lengths away snatching third money from Rebel Lad on the post. Then cjime Silver Ring, Wild Career and Studley Royal. FLASHLIGHTS PROMISE Polydora dropped out of the Craigmore Steeplechase. Sunward went off in the lead with Flashlight dwelling slightly and going along the back Sunward led from Red Sceptre and Nightbound. Round the top the call was Sunward, Flashlight, Red Sceptre and Uncle Jiih but when the stand double was reached the order was Sunward, Uncle Jim, Flashlight and Nightbound. Sunward was jumping better than Uncle Jim and when the last-named bungled the hencoop at the top, Flashlight supplanted him in second place. Flashlight caught Sunward at the last fence and drew away to win by four lengths with Uncle Jim easing up fifteen lengths back. Red Sceptre completed the course but Gamehunter was pulled ui> early in the contest. Balmenter, Happy Knight and Merrymarch lost ground at the start of the Kingdown Hack Handicap and Shirred Ribbon was first to show but Lady Leigh quickly ran to the front from Ardmayle and Phalanx. Racing to the far turn Lady Leigh was still in charge from Potent, Phalanx and Shirred Ribbon, Happy Knight and Balmenter stiff bringing up the rear. The four leaders held their placings round the top and a furlong from home Lady Leigh was still clear but then Shirred Ribbon, Emmeline Girl and Rabble joined in and Shirred Ribbon wore Lady Leigh down and beat her by a length. Emmeline Girl was half a length behind Lady Leigh with Rabble, Potent and Ardmayle close up. CLOSE FINISH All seventeen in the card went to the post for the Beaconsfield Trot but Rollalong, Ace High, Post Haste and Precious Metal failed to go away. Taruna began smartly from Jambo,Happy Locanda, Oasis and Labourman and o going along the back Vagabond King and King’s Jubilee also came into prominence. Taruna led to the straight from Token, King’s Jubilee, Laurene Wood, Labourman and Oasis. Labourman caught Taruna a furlong from home and hung on to win by half a length from Laurene Wood, who had put in a fine run from the half-mile. Token was third, two lengths away, with King’s Jubilee, Taruna and Oasis all easing up next. Grey Honour was sent out a pronounced win favourite for the Seadown Handicap carrying more than three times as much as Nightcalm or Rodeur. Golden Chest, Viking, Silver Sail and Greek Gold were responsible for a delay at the barrier, Viking being rallied off. Viking and Silver Sail were slowest away. Grey Honour and Nightcalm showed momentarily in front and then Arrowrose rushed to the front and led across the top from Nightcalm, Silver Sail, Grey Honour and Viking. The

order was the same into the straight and the three leaders had a great set to over the last furlong, Nightcalm winning by half a head from Grey Honour with Arrowrose, who weakened over the last bit, a length away. Golden Chest and Rodeur were next. HANDICAPS FOR SECOND DAY (United Press Association) TIMARU. May 19.
