MEN WHO HAVE HELD IMPORTANT POSTS
THREE SECRETARIES ONLY IN 69 YEARS Since its formation 69 years ago, the Southland Building Society has had three secretaries only and there have been five presidents. The first secretary was Mr Frederick Nutter, who held the position until 1872; the second was Mr James Brown, known as “the veteran secretary,” who was appointed to the position in 1872 and held office until 1913, when he was appointed to the nominal position of assistant secretary, an office he held till his death. Mr H. L. Hay, the present secretary, has been in that post for the last 25 years. Of the five presidents of the society, the first was Mr J. Walker Bain, who held office from the foundation of the society till 1899. Messrs D. L. Matheson, Robert Erskine and John Matheson followed in that order. The present president of directors is Mr A. S. Froggatt, who has been in that office since 1932.
Mr Froggatt has been a director of the society since 1906, and his father, Mr George Froggatt was a director from 1877 until his death in 1912.
