“At the annual meeting of shareholders, held, in 1918, the society was placed in a position by an amendment of the rules to lend money on war bonds. Large sums have been invested by the public in these bonds, and as time goes on there can be no doubt many holders will be glad of the opportunity of making them available as security.” This statement appeared in a circular issued by the Southland Building Society at the time of its 50th jubilee in 1919.
