CZECHOSLOVAKIA TO HAVE BIRTHDAY
STATE “FIRST SAW THE LIGHT’’ IN FRANCE PARIS, April 1. Czechoslovakia, on which the eyes of the world are turned anxiously at present, was “born” at Damey, France, and its birth is due to be celebrated there on June 20. Damey is a small town 10 miles from the world-famous health resort of Vittel. Czechoslovakia as a national entity was conceived in Pittsburgh, where representatives of the Czechs and Slovaks signed the “Treaty of Pittsburgh,” but it was at Damey that the “birth” took place. It was on June 30, 1918, that President Raymond Poincare, speaking for France, announced that his government had recognized Czechoslovakia and her right to be an independent nation. Other Powers followed suit, and the new state recognized de jure became a nation de facto after the Armistice.
