AGREEMENT WITH ElRE.'—The House of Lords read a third tune the Eire Bill, which has received Royal Assent. The trade agreement will operate from today, when the emergency duties will be abolished. NEW HIGH COMMISSIONER.— Sir Gerald'Campbell, who is at present British Consul-General at New York, has been selected as High Commissioner in Canada, succeeding Sir Francis Floud. (British Official Wireless.) NAVAL STAFF CHANGE.— The King has approved the appointment of Vice-Admiral Andrew B. Cunningham to be a Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty and Deputy-Chief. of the Naval Staff, succeeding Admiral Sir William James. (British Official Wireless.) BRITAIN’S COST OF LIVING.—On April 30 the Ministry of Labour’s cost--of-living index was approximately 56 per cent, above the level of July 1914, compared with 54 per cent, a month earlier and 52 per cent, a year earlier. (British Official Wireless.) .PLOTTING IN LEBANON.— Seventy people were arrested for plotting to overthrow the Lebanese Republican Government in favour of maintenance of the existing French mandate or direct administration by France. (Beirut.) AIR DEBATE POSTPONED.—The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir John Simon) announced in the House of Commons that Mr Neville Chamberlain’s indisposition would prevent his presence in the House of Commons today; therefore the air defence debate had been postponed.
