TROOPS DESPATCHED TO PROVINCES MEXICO CITY, May 17. The Mexican Government has moved troops into the State of Guanajuato and San Luis Potosi as a precaution against possible uprisings. The university is considered by leftists as a rightist stronghold. The newspaper Hombre Libre prints a rumour that the President (General Lazaro Cardenas) intends to resign. CLOSING OF LEGATION IN LONDON (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, May 17. The surprise and regret of his Majesty’s Government at the decision of the Mexican Government to close fts Legation in London were expressed by the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs (Mr R. A. Butler) in a House of Commons answer. He said that he could not forecast any further action which might be undertaken but the Government would naturally continue to use its best endeavours to protect the substantial British commercial interests in Mexico.

Mr Butler expressed the hope that any efforts of the British Government to secure a settlement with Mexico would be supported in all quarters of the House.
