JOHN ASHORE The new motor-vessel Port St. John, bound from New Plymouth to Gladstone, went ashore at Lady Elliot Island, Queensland, at 9 p.m. on May 4. An attempt was made to refloat the vessel soon after striking, but was unsuccessful. Another attempt was made again the following day, but was still unsuccessful. The small coastal steamer Canonbar was standing by. The Port Line, Ltd, made arrangements for the Queensland tug Carlock to leave at once for the stranded vessel, also for the tug Heros to leave Sydney to give assistance. In the messages received in Sydney from Queensland no mention was made as to what damage the Port Saint John suffered. The Port Saint John, which was only launched at Sunderland last October, is a vessel of 5668 tons gross, and was on her maiden voyage to Australian ports, via New Zealand, to start loading for the United Kingdom and the Continent. Lady Elliot Island is situated about 100 miles south-east of Gladstone. The grounding of the Port Saint John makes the fourth grounding on the Queensland coast since March 26. The Bingera went aground in Whitsunday Passage at the end of April, and after temporary repairs being effected proceeded to Sydney for permanent repairs. " The tanker Sepia, whic went ashore on Ipilll Reef, near Goode Island, on May 3, was still aground on May 6, and more attempts will be made to refloat her.
