JUVENILE LAZYBONES VICTORIOUS
SON OF SOUTHLAND SIRE By SIR MODRED ? Looked upon for some tune past as a disappointing three-year-old, although classed as a youthful winner, Lazybones on Saturday exhibited excellent form at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting. On that occasion the son of a Southland sire displayed encouraging form when he won the Flying Handicap; of £175 (seven furlongs), defeating a field of more than average merit to score in the good time of Imin 26sec. Starting a 6-7 selection under 7.0 (M. Caddy) he beat 1-2 Grey Honour 8.1 (L. J. Ellis) by a head, with 3-4 Ponty 8.11 (Wilson) next in order. Included in the beaten division were 1-1 Paper Slipper (9.6), Waitaka (8.5) and several other smart racers. It was an excellent performance and. may herald the juvenile coming into his own during the next 12 months. Bred by Mr T. H. Lowry and raced by Mr G. R. Macdonald during his early career, Lazybones has always created the impression that he would improve with age. Introduced to the turf by trainers H. and A. Cutts, Lazybones is by Nigger Minstrel, by All Black (imp.) from Aurarius (dam of Desert Gold, by All Black), by Maltster (son of Bill of Portland, by St. Simon) from Aurous, by Wallace (son of Carbine) from Aura, by Richmond from Instep (imp., and a noted foundation mare in Australia). The English horse All Black was a good winner and was placed in many important events When raced in his native land. The dam of Saturday’s Ashburton winner was a mare tracing back strongly to the best families of Otago, in the days when many good winners were being bred in the northern province. Lazybones was from Slack Line, by Night Raid (imp., and by Radium, son of Bend Or, from Sentiment, by Spearmint, by Carbine) from Miss Hook, by Sarto (imp., and by St. Simon) from Monture, by Royal Artillery (son of Hotchkiss from a mare of St. LegerRobipson Crusoe line) from Lady Rosslyn, by Lord Rosslyn from Lady Gertrude, by Cadogan (imp.) from No Name, by Traducer (imp.) and on down the maternal line to the celebrated stud mare Flora Mclvor. Miss Hook, the granddam of Lazybones, was bred by Sir George McLean and this accounts for her long line of horses and mares as connected with the successful Warrington Stud, a property near Dunedin now devoted to dairying pursuits.
