The engagement is announced between Kenneth, youngest son of Mr and Mrs D. M. Crawford, Halwyn, Beaumont, and Peace, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs G. C. Towns, of Edievale. Mr and Mrs M. O’Dowda have returned from a visit to Central Otago. Mrs Denniston Cuthbertson, Duke street, returned last evening from a brief visit to Dunedin. Mrs A. Mclntosh, Gap road, Winton, spent a few days last week as the guest of Mrs J. E. Horton, Mokotua. Mrs R. M. Hutton-Potts, Don street, with her daughter, Michal, returns today from a holiday at the Rocks, Riverton. Mrs H. W. Kirkby, of Tauranga, who is the guest of her mother, Lady Anderson, Victoria Park, leaves on Sunday on her return north. Mrs Leonard Webb, Albert street, leaves today for Timaru, where she will be the guest of Miss Loo Cartwright. Later she will visit Christchurch. At the weekly meeting of the Bridge Circle of the Southland Women’s Club on Monday evening there were nine tables in play. Mrs T. Cagney won the highest score prize, and Mrs E. A. Clark had the hidden number. On Saturday evening the Nurses’ Home, Leven street, was the scene of a bright party given by the sisters and staff nurses, in honour of Miss M. Small, who is shortly leaving to further her studies at Palmerston North. Matron Fitzgibbon expressed the good wishes of those present to Miss Small, and presented her with a gift. Miss Small was previously entertained by

other members of the staff and received several gifts. Those present were Misses Fitzgibbon, M. Small, M. Ferguson, I. Carswell, M. Gaitt, M. Egan, E. Watson, M. Moody; Messrs J. Cochrane (Gore), S. Little, I. Hutton-Potts, B. Murgatroyd, J. Thew (Wellington), J. Boyd, L. Small, G. Dew (Sydney) and F. Poole. The annual ball of the Bluff Men’s Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, held in the Town Hall on Monday night, was a successful function, and was attended by more than 100 couples. Music was supplied by Cecil Dixon’s orchestra, and Mr R. Barnett was master of ceremonies. The hall was decorated with the colours of the brigade. Euchre was provided for those who did not wish to dance. The winners of the novelty dances were: — Monte Carlo, Miss N. Perkins and Mr T. Heads and Miss A. Sargeant and Mr M. Anglem; lucky spot, Miss Race and Mr M. West, Miss P. Watson and Mr C. Low, Miss J. Rutledge and Mr M. McCartney, Miss Drake and Mr McLennan, Miss M. Ballantyne and Mr Murdoch. Prose readings from Charles Dickens formed the programme for the meeting of the Play Reading Circle of the Southland Women’s Club last evening. The selections were “High Life Below Stairs” from “The Old Curiosity Shop,’ which had the fololwing cast:—Dick Swiveller, Mrs A. F. Parfitt; small servant, Mrs G. R. Milward; Mr Winterden Mrs H. Parker; Mr Garland, Mrs Richie Crawford. “A Day at Dotheboy’s Hall” from “Nicholas Nickleby” was read as follows:—Mr Squeers, Mrs A. F. Parfitt; Nicholas, Mrs H. Parker; Mrs Squires, Mrs C. E. Watts; Smike, Mrs G R. Milward. “Boots at Hollytree Inn” from “Sketches,” had the following cast: —Cobbs and Boots, Mrs G. R. Milward; Master Harry, Mrs H. Parker; Mrs Ritchie Crawford read the chorus for the three pieces.
