The Social Round

The engagement is announced of Jewel Penelope, only daughter of Mr and Mrs J. G. Thompson, Mount White, Cass, to David Fraser, elder son of Mr and Mrs Donald Young, Hedgehope, Southland. Mr and Mrs T. G. Hardy Rakaia, are visiting Tuatapere. Mr and Mrs C. J. Brodrick, 'Wellesley, have returned from a holiday in Christchurch and North Canterbury. Miss Marie McLennan, Carlyle street, leaves by the express this morning to spend a holiday in Christchurch and Oamaru. Mrs E. R. Bremner, of Wellington, who is the guest of her mother, Mrs B. C. Basstian, Tweed street, returns today from a short visit to Dunedin. Mrs R. M. Hutton-Potts, Don street, and Mrs L. W. Fulcher, Herbert street, with their daughters, leave today to spend a holiday at The Rocks, Riverton. Mrs C. R. Story, Venlaw, was hostess at a luncheon party yesterday in honour of Miss Lois Douglas, Don street, whose marriage to Mr M. O’Dowda takes place on Tuesday. Mr and Mrs Cleghorn were welcomed home from their honeymoon by a big number of residents of the district in the Kelso hall on Thursday
evening. Mr J. Whitefield presented to Mr and Mrs Cleghorn a sum of money from their friends and conveyed to them congratulations and good wishes. Mr Cleghorn replied. Mrs G. Brookes supplied the music for the dancing and Messrs J. Rodger and G. Moyles were masters of ceremonies.
Mrs A. Owen-Johnston, Thomson ■ street, returns tomorrow from Dunedin. The Hon. B. C. Robbins, M.L.C.,and Mrs Robbins, of Tauranga, are visiting Invercargill. Miss Thelma Gault, Invercargill, is spending a few days with Mrs T. Bennett, Papatotara. Mrs G. H. Uttley, the Rectory, Crinan street, leaves during the week-end to spend a holiday in Dunedin. Mrs F. Beer, Otautau, has been spending a few days with her parents, Mr and Mrs Wells, Papatotara. Mrs Howard Booth and Miss Noel Booth, of Carterton, arrive on Monday to be the guests of Mrs R. A. Douglas, Don street, for the O’Dowda-Douglas wedding at which Miss Booth will be a bridesmaid. Mesdames J. D. Spiers, R. Wilkes and I. Mclvor and Misses E. Melville, D. Hutton, A. Budd, M. Cairns and M. Edie, members of the Southland branch of the Waitaki Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association, have left for Oamaru to attend the school jubilpe celebrations.
