AMERICAN LIMIT ON BATTLESHIPS
TENTATIVE MAXIMUM OF 35,000 TONS WASHINGTON, May 2. The Senate adopted an amendment to the Naval Bill tentatively limiting battleship displacement to 35,000 tons “unless the President is determined, through consultation with other naval Powers, that that tonnage limitation is being exceeded.” Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg (Michigan) explained that this will prevent the United States from assuming the leadership in the world armament race.
