SEAMAN SHOT ON WARSHIP
YOUNG SAILOR UNDER “NAVAL ARREST” INVESTIGATION BY POLICE ALLEGEDLY STOPPED (Received May 3, 8.40 p.m.) BRISBANE, May 3. While the warship Dorsetshire was steaming up the Queensland coast a seaman named Dickinson was fatally shot in the temple. It is believed that Dickinson was lying in his bunk when he was shot. The police and the Coroner boarded the vessel on her arrival at Cairns. A 19-year-old seaman is under '‘naval arrest.” The ship’s commander, it is understood, prevented Queensland detectives from intervening or even investigating the shooting, on the ground that it occurred on the high seas, outside the jurisdiction of the Queensland police.
