SITE FOR CLOCK TOWER

INTERSECTION OF CLYDE AND TAY STREETS A recommendation by the Finance Committee that a new clock tower, to accommodate the clock situated in the Post Office building, be erected at the intersection of Clyde and Tay streets was adopted by the Invercargill City Council last evening. In its report on the clock tower the committee said that it asked the South African War Veterans’ Association that if, in the event of the council erecting a clock tower at the Dee and Tay streets intersection, the association would be agreeable to the trooper on the present memorial being embodied in a suitable alcove in the proposed new tower. The matter would be considered at the annual meeting of the association on May 14, 1938. “The committee understands that the association is strongly opposed to the suggestion to place the trooper in an alcove in the proposed new clock tower,” added the report.
