With his favourite octopus clamp Lofty Blomfield defeated Pat McKay by one fall in the seventh round before a capacity house. Though McKay wrestled well he was no match for Blomfield, who had the upper hand practically throughout.

GOLF APRIL MEDAL HANDICAP AT QUEEN’S PARK The monthly medal handicap was decided on the Queen’s Park golf links on Saturday afternoon. In spite of the boisterous weather there was a big field and the scoring was very good. E. B. Hughes won the A. Grade trophy with a net 68, but had only one stroke to spare from I. W. Campbell. A. R. Pennink, ■won the English amateur golf championship on the Leeds course, beating S. Banks 2 and 1. HARRIERS INVERCARGILL CLUB’S RUN AT OTATARA The Invercargill Harrier Club held its opening run at Otatara on Saturday afternoon, where the runners were the guests of the club-captain, Mr J. Metcalfe. The day was not ideal for harrier work, especially from the point of view of the new members, who found tiie strong wind troublesome. The short run home was headed by I. Herbison and G. H. Watson. After the run, the harriers were entertained at tea. Mr G. McAnergney expressed thanks on behalf of the runners, Mr J. Metcalfe replying. Next week’s run will be held from the Waikiwi Sunday School Hall. ST. PAUL’S CLUB RUNS IN TWO PACKS In rough weather many members, including several new members, ran from St. Andrew’s hall, South Invercargill, on Saturday. The pack, under the whistle of the club captain, A. Hind, ran south turning behind the Southland hospital, then east towards Tisbury. At this stage the pack divided into two sections. One under the deputy captain, H. Alington, turned for home and the other continued for a few miles further over some excellent harrier country. In a short run home, in the teeth of a strong wind, A. Stevens and H. and G. Alington showed up well in the first pack. J. Berry, R. Dixon, F. Penman led the second pack in. '' Next Saturday the run will be from the. Waikiwi hall. BOXING BAKER TO MEET PARKES TONIGHT Dick Baker, Southland welterweight boxer, who is to meet Tiger Parkes at Dunedin tonight, left Invercargill for Dunedin by car yesterday morning. He was accompanied by the amateur boxers, W. Enwright, T. Denny, and A. Cameron, all of whom will participate in the preliminaries to the BakerParkes professional bout. Mr A. E. Tall, who is superintending Baker’s training, also was a member of the party. Baker has been matched to fight Jack Jarvis, lightweight champion of New Zealand at Invercargill next Monday. WOMEN’S HOCKEY FIRST PRACTICE GAME A practice match between Collegiate and Technical women’s hockey teams was played at Queen’s Park on Saturday to mark the opening of the season for the Southland Women’s Hockey Association. Collegiate fielded a team of mostly new players, only two of last year’s members taking part in the play. Mr F. Hinton was the umpire of the game. So far there are only three teams in the competition but it is hoped to muster a fourth for next Saturday, when a match will be played between Technical and Ex-High School. Failing a fourth team Collegiate will stand down and if there is not another team by the following Saturday there will probably be no competition. LAWN TENNIS BROMWICH WINS AT CITY OF SYDNEY TOURNAMENT (Received May 1, 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 1. Finals were played at the City of Sydney lawn tennis championship tournament. Results:— . , , „ Men’s Singles.—J. Bromwich beat V. H. McGrath, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1. Bromwich was in brilliant form. His placements were perfect and he showed terrific speed and accuracy. Men’s Doubles.—J. H. Crawford and V. H. McGrath beat J. Bromwich and D. Pails, 6-3, 9-7, 6-3. Women’s Singles.—Miss M. Buck beat Miss V. Selwin, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

RIFLE SHOOTING CITY GUARDS CLUB’S MATCH R. ADAMS WINS AGGREGATE The City Guards Defence Rifle Club fired another stage of the A and B grade championships at Otatara on Saturday afternoon, 10 shots being fired at 300 and 500 yards. The weather was boisterous throughout and the scores were below the average. At 300 yards W. McChesney, 555544455 5-47 counted out C. E. Young, 5 5 5 5 5 4 5 4 5 4—47 for first place, W. J. Murray being third with 45. At 500 yards R. Adams with 455454554 5—46 counted out W. J. Murray, 5 4 4 4 5 5 5 5 5 4—46 and B. Broomfield 5 4 5 5 5 5 4 5 4 4—46 for first place. Five tied for first place in the aggregate, R. Adams, with 44 at 300 yards and the best 46 at 500 yards, counting out W. J. Murray, B. Broomfield, C. Mathieson and W. McChesney. With 10 shots at 500 yards and 15 shots at 600 yards to fire, the position of the leaders is J. Tansley 325, G. Moreton 324, W. J. Murray 319, R. W. Henderson 318, W McChesney 318. Next Saturday the final stage will be fired and also the first stage of the Old City Guards’ Challenge Cup competition.

INVERCARGILL CLUB’S MATCH FIRST COMPETITION FOR LENNIE CUP The first competition of the Invercargill Defence Club for the Lennie Cup was fired at Otatara on Saturday afternoon in boisterous weather. The ranges were 300 and 500 yards, 10 shots at each. Considering the rough conditions the scoring was of a fair average. At 300 yards W. Milley with 5 3 5 5 5 5 5 5 4 5—47 was top of the list, J. Reeves, E. Grieber and J. Clark being next with 46 each. At 500 yards Mrs Doake shot, well for 544555555 5—48 and headed the list. A. Ford, J. Archer and A. R. Wills wtfre next with 47 each. J. Clark headed the aggregate with 92, counting' out W. Milley 92. Wills and Grieber made 91 each.

MINIATURE RANGE SCORES

The Boys’ Miniature Rifle Club held their weekly shoot on Saturday, there being a fair attendance. The shooting showed good improvement. J. W. Doake won the Hotty Button with a good 78. The nightly trophies will start from next Saturday on handicap.
