MEN’S HOCKEY

SECOND SERIES OF MATCHES EVEN SCORING IN SENIOR GAMES A cold wind made conditions unpleasant for the second series of matches in the Southland Men’s Hockey Association’s competition on Saturday. The matches were played at Queen’s Park on hard grounds, and the standard of play generally was good. Scoring in both the senior matches was even and the games were well fought. Collegiate had a narrow win over Civil Service in a bright and interesting match. Civil Service opened the scoring and put up a lead of two goals before Collegiate could make any impression whatever. From then on the ball was passed about freely from one end of the field to the other. R. Shields and V. Poole made the most of the ball when they had it and with Melrose they made many attacks _on the Civil Service goal. H. Rennick, who usually plays in the forward line for Civil Service, took the position of full-back and his long clearing hits stopped many rushes. High _ School put up four goals to Central’s six in a hard-fought game. L. Anderson and Ritchie played a good attacking style of hockey in the forwards and combined well. Central’s forward line was kept together by E. Mullen and H. Kennedy. The halves were sound. _ The juniors’ display was disappointing. Technical had a “walk-over against High School B by 20 goals to nil, and in a ragged match Collegiate B beat Technical B by eight goals to one.

CENTRAL BEATS HIGH SCHOOL GAME ENDS WITH CLOSE . SCORES Central beat High School by the narrow margin of two goals. CENTRAL.—Cooke; Lythgoe, Low; Brown, Field, Semmens; Greer, Mullen, Kennedy, Hughes, Speirs. Central attacked immediately and High School was on the defensive for some time. Goodsir, the High School goalie, saved several good shots. Anderson broke away and High School’s forward line swept downfield into the Central circle. McKenzie opened the scoring for High School with a good shot. High School 1, Central 0. Field and Mullen turned to the attack and scored in quick succession for Central. Central 2, High School 1. Play remained in mid-field in ragged exchanges for some time, but Speirs eventually went away on his own down the wing. He sent the ball past the goal. H. Kennedy captured the ball from a corner and shot into an open goal. Central 3, High School 1. The High School forwards rallied after this and Ritchie and McKenzie took the ball down the right wing and Ritchie centred it well to Anderson. Anderson beat the Central goalie with a good shot. Central 3, High School 2. * Central carried the play back into High School territory and Goodsir saved a shot from a corner. Keane sent the ball to Ritchie, but Lythgoe took the ball from Ritchie and sent it to Hughes, who sent it to Mullen, but Mullen missed his shot Kennedy broke away from the 25 bully and sent in a fast shot. Central 4, High School 2. High School attacked* again and Cooke had to save. Ritchie trapped the ball and shot for goal, but his shot was wide. The Central forwards broke through the High School attack, and Kennedy and Speirs went into the High School circle. Stewart and Goodsir cleared the ball and half-time, sounded with the score still

The result was always in doubt, neither side keeping the upper hand for long. The standard of hockey played was brighter and more interesting than that of the previous Saturday. H. Rennick was the outstanding player for Civil Service and for Collegiate V. i Poole was always on the ball. The teams were: CIVIL SERVICE. —Jones; Barraclough, Rennick; Elliotte, Sharp, Hardcastle; Walker, F. Poole,' H. Poole, Gray, Chambers. COLLEGIATE. —N. Poole; Fenton, Hodgson; Hennessey, Chisholm, McMillan; Trewick, Waddell, V. Poole, Melrose, Shields. Civil Service led away from the first bully. Gray and H. Poole made a dash for the Collegiate goal, supported by F. Poole and Walker. Hodgson stopped the rush and cleared the ball to the line, but Civil Service intercepted it and sent the forwards into the goal again. After several attacks Gray got past N. Poole, in goal, with a quick shot. Civil Service 1, Collegiate 0. Collegiate got the ball away from the bully and Melrose made for the Civil Service goal. Rennick and Barraclough combined well to save the shot. Collegiate hammered repeatedly at the goal, but the defence was sound. Play swung back into midfield and stayed there for a time, neither side gaining any advantage. Civil Service at last trapped the ball and F. Poole and Walker made a bold bid for the Collegiate goal. Fenton came over to intercept and Poole passed to H. Poole, who passed to Gray. Gray shot hard. Civil Service 2, Collegiate 0. Collegiate began to turn the tide when Shields broke through with Melrose and sent in a fast shot. A few moments later V. Poole went through the Civil Service defence and goaled, making the half-time score: Civil Service 2, Collegiate 2 In the second half the ball was pass-

ed about freely and play swung from one end of the field to the other. First Collegiate attacked and then Civil Service, but each side’s defence proved equal to the occasion. The result was in doubt almost till the final whistle, but V. Poole put in a fine run and shot the winning goal. Civil Service could not break through the Collegiate defence in time to bring the scores equal and full time sounded with the score: Collegiate 3, Civil Service 2 Messrs F. Hinton and E. Pankhurst were the umpires. JUNIOR GRADE TECHNICAL A BEATS HIGH SCHOOL B Technical A had a “walk-over” victory against a scratch High School B team by 20 goals to nil. Goals were scored for Technical A by Storrie, Brandford, Phillips, Douche, Cockroft, King and Sayers. Mr W. R. Curwen was the umpire. TECHNICAL B BEATEN BY COLLEGIATE B Collegiate B had an easy win against Technical B by eight goals to one. The play was ragged and not of a high standard. Mr E. Pankhurst was the umpire.
