BOOT INDUSTRY NOT SATISFIED

REPLY TO MR JORDAN’S EXPLANATION

(Received March 17, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, March 16.

The Federation of Boot Manufacturers, replying to the High Commissioner for New Zealand (Mr W. J. Jordan), contends that the duty of 3/- exceeds the requirements of the Anglo-New Zealand agreement, which provides for duties sufficient to maintain a fair balance between British and New Zealand industries. It adds that the duty will mean a severe loss to British trade. The federation, referring to Mr Jordan’s statement that the New Zealand cost of production had increased 20 per cent., says that the rise was previously reported as 10 per cent. It also disagrees with the opinion of the House of Commons meeting that prohibitive duties have not been imposed. _____________
