EMPIRE’S BIG ADVANTAGE IN NUMBERS LONDON, March 16. The Italian Under-Secretary of State for Marine (Admiral Domenico Cavagnari) informed the Chamber of Deputies that Italy was launching and laying down more than 260,000 tons of new warships. The aggregate tonnage by 1941 would be:— Tons. Battleships 24,000 Cruisers 160,000 Light surface craft 190,000 Submarines 100,000 The Chamber approved of naval appropriations exceeding £20,000,000. Britain in IS4I will complete her current naval programme, bringing the competent strength to about 1,750,000 tons. Italy’s fleet will then comprise four modern battleships of 35 000 tons and four older reconstructed vessels, compared with nine modem British 35,000 tonneis and thirteen older capital ships, most of which have been brought up to date. Italy will thus have 19 modem cruisers as compared with Britain’s 56.
