RECENT REDUCTION IN DUES VESSELS DIVERTED TO PANAMA ROUTE Following a reduction in Panama canal dues at the beginning of this month nearly all liners loading in New Zealand for the United Kingdom and scheduled to take the Cape Hom route to England, have been diverted to the Panama canal route. No details have yet been received of the actual reduction in the canal dues (says The Dominion), but the fact that so many ships have been ordered to take that route Home, indicates that the reduction is fairly substantial. For the last four years the number of liners leaving New Zealand for England has been fairly evenly divided between the two routes. From the middle of 1931 till the end of 1933, all vessels leaving for England, except passenger liners, used the Cape Horn route, but for over 10 years before 1931, all ships proceeded Home via the Panama canal. After England went off the gold standard in 1931 sterling fell considerably in terms of the American

dollar, and the cost of the Panama canal dues increased enormously. It was then that almost all vessels from New Zealand to England ceased to use the Panama canal and proceeded via Cape Hom. This route is about 500 miles longer than that via Panama, and is about two days extra steaming for most of the vessels engaged in this trade.

Towards the end of 1933 the American dollar fell, and sterling rose above parity in terms of the dollar. This led to a number of vessels beginning to use the Panama canal again, and since then both routes have received about an equal share of the Homeward-bound vessels from New Zealand.

With the present substantial drop in the Panama canal dues and the almost wholesale diversion of vessels now loading on the coast, it appears that the Cape Hom route will be used almost solely by ships carrying cargo for Montevideo or Rio de Janeiro.
