JUVENILE TEST AT TRENTHAM NEW ZEALAND ST. LEGER TODAY (By SIR MODRED) A test of juvenile endurance, the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes, of £4OO, for three-year-olds, colts and geldings 8.10, fillies 8.7 (one and three-quarter miles) will he decided at Trentham this afternoon at the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting. There is only one other race over a similar distance for juveniles during the season in New Zealand,. the Great Northern St. Leger at Auckland, and last year the winner was the Lord Warden filly Cerne Abbas, who subsequently won the New Zealand Cup as a four-year-old. The classic has been won by several smart performers in recent years. Of those Cerne Abbas, Greek Shepherd, Kelly, Red Manfred, Silver Scorn, Peter Jackson, and Karapoti may be mentioned as juveniles of more than average merit of the past few seasons.

The fields for the Wellington Racing Club’s event have generally been on the restricted side, but there has been quite a number of exciting contests. With only four horses eligible today there may still be an exciting struggle. Interest will be taken in the result as far away as Australia, as at least two of the runners in Courtcraft and Royal Order may be raced in Sydney at Easter. The colt Courtcraft (son of Limond from Homage) is claimed to be the best youngster of his age in the North Island for some years, and South Islanders will look to the Riccartontrained colt Royal Chief (son of Chief Ruler from Modiste II) to test Mr W. H. Gaisford’s representative. The Crooner, by the Southland-owned sire Nigger Minstrel from Symballo, may be in the hunt, as he is descended from stout strains. Mahutai, whose name concludes the list of eligible entrants, is a colt by Hunting Song from Humoresque, by Prince Willonyx (imp.) from Barcarole, by Martian from Grand Opera, by Gipsy Grand from lima, by Stepniak, and tracing back on the maternal side to'' Mermaid (imp,, and one of New Zealand’s best taproot mares where stoutness is concerned). The New Zealand St. Leger calls for staying ability in its three-year-old contestants. '
