GOLF PLAYED ON SUNDAY

Regret Expressed By Presbytery INVERCARGILL CLUB TO HEAR PROTEST Disapproval of Sunday golf and regret that there had been play in the recent New Zealand professional golf tournament on a Sunday was expressed at the meeting of the Southland Presbytery yesterday. It was decided to send a letter to the Invercargill Golf Club expressing this opinion and stating that the presbytery would welcome steps by the club to discourage Sunday play in general and tournament play in particular. The question was raised in the report of the public questions committee submitted by the Rev. J. Newlanas and the presbytery adopted the following resolution to be forwarded to the secretary of the club: “This presbytery notes with regret that the annual tournament of the New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association held on the Otatara golf links, at the invitation of your club, included Sunday, February 13, in its programme of play. While in fullest sympathy with the promotion of all healthy forms of recreation, the presbytery views with serious concern the action of your club in permitting tournament play on Sundays. It considers such practice opposed to the highest welfare of all concerned. We are glad to learn that the majority of golf clubs in the Dominion discourage tournament play on Sundays. Believing as we do that the Sabbath day, when exclusively devoted to the purpose for which it was ordained, is a national asset, this presbytery will welcome any steps your club may take to discourage Sunday play in general and tournament play in particular.”
