RAIL-CAR SERVICE TO KINGSTON
LEAGUE’S REQUEST TO MINISTER A statement that the Government had failed to keep its promise to inaugurate a rail-car service from Gore through Invercargill to Kingston was made to the Southland Progress League at Queenstown on Saturday night by the chairman of the Lake County Council (Mr L. Lee), and the league agreed to write to the Minister of Railways (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) asking that improved transport facilities be provided between Lumsden and Kingston. “We have been told that the construction of rail-cars has been held up by the difficulty in getting steel,” Mr Lee said, “but we feel that if we don’t kick everyone else will get in before us. The present service is a distinct detriment to the district.” He added that there was now no passenger transport by rail between Lumsden and Kingston and it was feared + hat in the worst weather the buses would not be able to cross areas occasionally flooded. The league was unanimous in its decision to support the application for a service by rail-car.
