WET CRICKET GROUNDS

BEST TOTAL BY UNION Uttley And Poole Bat Well MARIST DISMISSED FOR 80 BLUFF MAKES 142 AGAINST INVERCARGILL Rain delayed the start of senior cricket matches on Saturday for about three-quarters of an hour, and the games were played on heavy grounds. It was necessary to cut another wicket for the match between Union and Old Boys on the High School groundUnion showed a pronounced improvement in its batting form and left Old Boys to face a score of 220. Uttley’s 59 for Union was the best performance of the day, and Poole, who was in partnership with him for a time, made 45. When play ended for the day Old Boys had one wicket down for 36, with Scandrett still batting. Marist, which had been doing well in the last few weeks, collapsed in its first innings against Appleby on the Appleby ground and made only 80. Appleby has two wickets down for 40. Bluff made 142 in its match at Biggar street against Invercargill, W. Carson making top score with 48. Invercargill has lost one wicket for 79, of which Service (not out) contributed 40.

Bowling Pickard (Old Boys), six for 56. Purdue (Appleby), four for 22. Haworth (Invercargill), three for 22. Calvert (Appleby), three for 30 Knapp (Invercargill), two for 19. C. McKenzie (Appleby), two for 21.

UNION MAKES GOOD START FIRST INNINGS YIELDS TOTAL OF 220 Union made an excellent start with its first wicket partnership between Brew and Poole, which produced 61 runs. Brew batted steadily for 19, the first 10 of which were singles, until he lifted one into Wesney’s hands off Pickard. Uttley took his place and Poole, who had played a fine strike throughout, was dismissed seven runs later for 45, which included six boundaries. The innings sagged in the middle, but Uttley was going well, playing the difficult ones cautiously and hitting the loose ones. With his score at 59 he was caught behind the wicket by Hawke off Pickard. His partnership with Swinney was a valuable one, producing 41 runs, of which Swinney contributed 23. The last wicket partnership provided an exhibition of fireworks, O’Grady and Hinton scoring 43 between them in a very short space of time. Hinton pulled three spectacular 6’s to the. school building off successive deliveries from Scandrett, whose last over cost 24 He was lifting them high, however, and was well taken at 35 by Mackie off Semmens. At one stage he was held by Robison, but the catch was taken across the boundary. Old Boys tried six bowlers, of whom Pickard with his slow deliveries was most successful, his six wickets costing only 56 runs. Scandrett and Hawke opened for Old Boys and in the half hour that was left scored 36 runs, slumps being drawn when Hawke's wicket fell at 25. His score included four 4’s. Details:—

BLUFF TEAM’S FAIR TOTAL INVERCARGILL ONE DOWN FOR 79 Bluff's first innings score of 142 against Invercargill at Biggar street was contributed largely by W. Carson, who made 48, and J. Williamson, who made 41. Joel coming on to bowl late in the innings, took the last three wickets for 13 runs. Invercargill opened with Service and Haworth, who put on 44 before the latter was caught off Williamson for 19. When stumps were drawn Service had 40 up and J. Pollok was 10. MARIST’S SMALL SCORE COLLAPSE IN FIRST INNINGS APPLEBY TWO DOWN FOR 40 RUNS Appleby made short work of disposing of Marist, which opened its innings on the Appleby ground. McGowan, who opened with Ryan, made the best score of 21 and was dismissed when he returned a full toss to the bowler. Ryan and Mahoney failed to score and Grace was dismissed for a small total. For a while it looked as if Forde and McGowan would compile a .good score between them, but Forde was run out at 11. Derbie, who also returned one to the bowler, was the only other Marist batsman to make double figures. P. Grace and R. Mahoney were well caught by Spence in the slips. Appleby used three bowlers, all of whom secured good averages, Purdue maintaining his foi'm with four for 22. Spence and Purdue opened Appleby’s first innings to the bowling of Forde and H. Grace and the former played a sound game for 22 not out. Purdue fell a victim to Derbie, who dismissed him with the last ball of his first over—a magnificent delivery. Purdue set himself for big hits and gave one or two chances this way. Semmens was bowled by McGowan just on time after he had scored a couple of threes. His wrist work was good, but he failed to step out to the ball. Details:—
