DOMINION BANDS CHAMPIONSHIP

PORT NICHOLSON IN THE LEAD SECOND TEST SELECTION PLAYED (United Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, Feb. 25. The second test selection of the Dominion A grade bands championship was played tonight. At the conclusion the aggregate points for both tests were announced as follows: Port Nicholson. —First test, 142; second test, 137. Total, 279. Timaru Municipal.—l3l, 133; total 264. Wellington Tramway.—l3o, 130; total, 260. Auckland Regiment.—llo, 123; total. 233. Palmerston North Garrison.—ll 4, 118; total, 232. Auckland Artillery—lls, 115; total, 230.

Wanganui Garrison, last year’s champions who retired because of the death of the conductor’s mother, secured 136 points in the first test. Subject to Christchurch agreeing to the usual conditions, that city will be the venue of the next contest. An application on behalf of Dunedin was withdrawn.

The New Zealand Brass Bands Association elected officers as follows for the ensuing year:— Patron, Viscount Galway; vice-pat-rons, Dr H. T. J. Thacker, Mr H. D. Bennett; president, Mr p. Palliser; vice-presidents, Messrs F. J. W. McLeod, G. H. Bailey, J. H. Walker, H. B. Burdekin; executive, Messrs C. G. Baker, A. G. Homer, E. R. Hopwood, T. Goodall, W. P. McLachlan, C. Patchett; secretary, Mr J. G. Osborne. An impressive funeral was given Mrs W. Francjs, mother of Mr R. Francis, conductor of the Wanganui Garrison Band, who died here on Wednesday while a visitor to the contest. Her husband and another son were also members of the Wanganui Garrison. Sixteen bands marched in procession through the city, heading the hearse. The Wanganui Garrison Band, which withdrew from the contest as a result of the bereavement has now decided to return for the quickstep tomorrow as a mark of consideration extended to it by other bands and citizens.
