BISHOP’S ATTACK ON LEGISLATION
EFFECT OF MORE LEISURE ON MAORI RACE (United Press Association) HASTINGS, February 25. The 40-hour week and legislation which resulted in the creation of more leisure time were blamed by the Bishop of Aotearoa (the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett) for aggravation of the evils of excessive drinking among Maoris. “A thing which ought to be a boon to Maoris has become a curse,” the Bishop said in an interview. “The effect of the extra leisure on the drinking habits of the Maori people has been very serious,” he said. “The native people are, themselves, realizing the harm drink is doing to the race and many leaders and chiefs are disturbed about it and anxious for the future. “The trouble is that the Maoris are gravitating to the bars and spending the whole day there. In many cases they are squandering money which should go to support rives and children.
