COUSIN BETTY’S LETTER

My dear Cousins,

Such a clatter and chatter there was on Table-top Land when Prudence Paperknife opened your entries this week. Farmyard animals from all parts of Southland came hopping and waddling out of the envelopes, and soon they sorted themselves out and found many friends and relations. In one corner I heard Mrs Duck and Mrs discussing their families, while the chickens played hide-and-seek in the leaves of Carrie Calendar, and the ducklings had an inky swim in Isohel Inkpot. Ronnie Rubber pulled the tail of a rooster from Dipton and then had to shut himself in a drawer, for the dignified rooster was very angry, and wanted to peck at him. However, soon the animals and Cousin Betty’s helpers became close friends, and had long talks about the Little Southlanders, and the farms where they lived. We were, sorry when our visitors had to leave, but we knew that we would see them all in the Chronicle on Saturday morning. Have you read the poems about them yet? . - , I have still to hear from a number of the members of the Silver Fern (Scattered) Clan. Please write at once, and tell me which cousin you choose for secretary of your clan.

This week our new feature makes its appearance. It is called “Things That Interest Me ” and the first contribution was sent in by one of my older cousins, Gwen Waterhouse of Orepuki. Have you prepared your own paragraph? I am looking forward to reading it, for I know that it will interest me, too. .. . x There will be another special prize at the end of the year for the neatest Marks Book, so if you have not already begun the record of your marks, make or buy a notebook and enter them before you lose or forget them. The Neatness and Art Club marks mav be carried over and counted in with the new ones for a prize and degree, but ordinary competition and Sharpener marks lists must start afresh. If you are not quite sure about this, write and let me know. What did you see today that interested you?

Your loving COUSIN BETTY.
