FIRST SELECTIONS OF TESTS BLIND PLAYER’S SUCCESS » (United Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, February 24. Events were continued at the New Zealand band contest today. Following were the placings in the first selection of the A Grade test:--Port Nicholson Silver, Wanganui Garrison, Timaru Municipal, Wellington Tramways, Auckland Artillery, Palmerston North Garrison, Auckland First Battalion. The points will be declared after the second selection on Friday night. Ten B grade bands competed in the first test selection. The placings were: Institute Silver, Wellington, Dannevirke Municipal, Christchurch Municipal, Ashburton!Silver, Wellington Artillery, Hawera \ Municipal, Feilding Municipal, Te Awamutu Municipal, Palmerston North City Silver, Hastings Citizens. After the second test Ashburton was first, Institute Silver Wellington second, and Dannevirke third. (Hie winner of the B flat comet championship, A. Morton, who is 18 years of age, is blind and has never seen a printed note of music in his life, everything having to be transcribed to Braille for him. He won the New Zealand championship two years ago in his first competitive effort. After the test reference was made to the death of Mr T. Lindsay Buick, vice-president of the New Zealand Bands Association, Mr P. C. Vinnell, Mayor of Timaru, whose son is a member of the Timaru Municipal Band, and Mrs Francis, wife of a member of the Wanganui Garrison Band and mother of the conductor and another member of the same band.
