CHINESE WALLED CITY FALLS
JAPANESE APPROACH YELLOW RIVER GENERAL MATSUI LEAVES SHANGHAI (Received February 23, 6.30 p.m.) TOKYO, February 22. The Japanese have captured the walled city of Hwaiking, 10 miles north of the Yellow river. The fate of the defender, General Sung Cheh-yuan, is not yet known. The Japanese bombed Hengchow, 300 miles north of Canton, from the air. General Iwane Matsui, the Japanese Commander-in-Chief has departed for Tokyo by air. His successor is General Shunrutu Hata, with Major-General Kawaba as, chief-of-staff. Chu Tse-tung, editor of the Chinese language newspaper Hwameipae, received a package containing a human hand and a note demanding cessation of anti-Japanese articles, in default of which “another present” would be sent to him. _____
