PERSONAL
Professor Felix Swinstead, of the Royal Academy of Music, London, will visit New Zealand this year to conduct practical examinations on behalf of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. He is well-known to musicians as the composer of many pieces for the pianoforte, sonatas for piano and strings, and as the writer of books on musical subjects.
Mr F. H. Hughes, secretary of the Southland Boxing Association, who was manager of the New Zealand boxing team which competed at the British Empire Games at Sydney, and Mr A. Sutherland, a member of the boxing team, returned to Invercargill by the express last evening. Captain F. J. Callan, formerly chief officer of the Wairuna, has taken up his duties as third pilot at Bluff. Mr D. D. Macdonald, of Nightcaps, has been elected to the vacancy on the Wallace County Council caused by the death of Mr G. W. E. Stroud. Mr Macdonald, who is one of the original members of the Ohai Railway Board, was returned unopposed. He will represent the Wairio riding on the council.
Mr C. S. Falconer, of Wellington, secretary of the Commanding of the Order of St. John and Serving Brother of the Order of St. John, will arrive in Invercargill today and will attend a meeting of the St John Ambulance Brigade tonight.
Sympathy with the relatives of Mr John McAlpine, whose death occurred recently, was expressed by the Caledonian Society of Invercargill last evening. Mr McAlpine was a director of the society for many years. Mr lan Watt, who is leaving Invercargill to liv,e in Wellington, was presented with a leather suitcase by fellow employees at Thomas Todd and Sons’ pipeworks, Waikiwi. Mr John Todd made the presentation and wished Mr Watt all success in the future. Mr Watt leaves for Wellington on Wednesday.
