PARKING GROUND FOR CARS

LAND NEAR SHOW GROUNDS PURCHASE BY A. AND P. ASSOCIATION A section of land consisting of about 12 acres, situated between Fox and Beatrice streets and near the show grounds, has been purchased by the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association from Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd. The actual block contains 17 acres but the five acres surrounding the firm’s wool store are being retained. When the ground is in proper condition it will be used as a sheep ground For'the next summer show although its principal value will be as a parking area for motor-cars at the Royal Show which is expected to be held in Invercargill next year. Cars may not be parked within the show grounds at a Royal Show and the association has been confronted with the necessity of providing a suitable accommodation area. At the end of a meeting of directors of the association yesterday afternoon a visit was made to the section where a trial demonstration of levelling the land was given by Mr William Allison, a farmer, of Drummond. Several high banks have to be removed before the swamp plough can be brought into operation and the process of levelling was watched yesterday by members of the directorate, who, after a brief meeting on the grounds, decided to engage Mr Allison to do the work immediately. The tractor used for the work drew an excavating scoop which removed big quantites of earth and spread them along the surface of the field. Tributes were paid by those present to the skill of the driver whose task of operating the tractor with one hand and the scoop behind him with the other was obviously no light one. The demonstration over, members expressed themselves as quite satisfied with the methods to be used for clearing the land and it was agreed that advantage should be taken of the fine weather and have the work begun at once.
