Original Verse
Well done, Cousin Helen. Did you write this poem all by yourself? I would like to see some more of your poems.
LITTLE TOMMY PUPPY DOG Little Tommy puppy dog Said that he could kill, All the little pussy-cats If he had the will. .
All the little pussy cats, Sitting in a row, Saw puppy dog a-barking, Doggy said “Bow wow.”
Doggy jumped at pussy-cats; Wasn’t there a fight! Doggy got the worst of it! ! Pussy-cats were right. —3 marks to Cousin Helen Cuttance ,(8), Tussock Creek,
You have some good ideas, Cousin Doris, and the metre and rhyme of your poems will improve with practice. Try a simple verse pattern of four lines, with an even rhythm. THE FLOWER FAIRY The little flower fairy Sleeps all the long winter. In the spring she visits Each little flower in turn. She opens bud and flower To greet the dawning day, Then she trips along to ask A little flower if she Can stay and play. —3 marks to Cousin Doris Neas (9), Makarewa. Read your other verse about the train, my cousin, and then read this poem again. The other lines have an even regular rhythm which these ones lack. See if you can write a poem, repeating the style of your first effort. THE CIRCUS One day I went to a circus, Wirth’s Circus it was named. I saw a parrot tame The one that is already famed— The one from the zoo. There are lions and tigers ’round you there, There are wild bears in a cage, There’s a tortoise there, of eighty years. That’s a very old age For an old tortoise to be. —2 marks to Cousin Alison Thomas (9), 50 Louisa street. This is not a very good limerick, Cousin June. Read one which you know is correct, and compare it with yours. Then try again, using the other as a pattern.
