INFLUENCE OF FEEDING
BUTTERFAT CONTENT IN MILK While several factors produce a temporary fluctuation in the butterfat content of milk, and one or two affect it permanently, it is broadly true to say that it cannot be permanently influenced by the foods fed. This assertion requires the qualifying statement that palm kernel cake, coco-nut cake, etc., have been found to produce a small, but permanent increase of butterfat; and that the feeding of too large a quantity of rice meal may depress the fat-content. The foods fed, can, however, affect the colour of the milk, and may make it look richer or poorer, although actually the quality remains unaffected. Apart from the influence of breed and individuality, the chief help towards the production of good quality milk is , efficient feeding before calving, so that the cow calves down in fresh condition.
