TODAY’S MATCH WITH NORTH OTAGO SOUTHLAND’S CHANCES FAVOURED (By TOP-SPIN) Special interest in today’s representative tennis match will be in North Otago’s star performer, Miss Dora Miller, who recently reached the final of the New Zealand, tennis championship at Auckland without losing a set, and was beaten by the leading woman of the country, Miss Margaret Beverley. The match is for the Anniversary Cup which Otago holds by virtue of a win in Oamaru two years ago. Last year in Oamaru and the previous year in Invercargill the matches were not completed because of interruptions by bad weather. The North Otago men are at full strength, but some of their leading women were unable to make the trip. Southland is without the services of Miss R. Wilson and Alan Baird. The match should be fairly even, but Southland’s chances of a win are considered favourable. The following are the teams in order of play:— NORTH OTAGO—S. McDougall, J.
McKenzie, A. Feathers, L. McKinnon, W. Giffin, L. Greer; Misses D. Miller, J. Brewer, Z. McKinnon, J. Corrigall, E. Baikie and I. Gunn. SOUTHLAND—R. McCallum, B. Whelan, A Deaker, W. Strang, I. Shand, D. M. McLeod; Miss J. Wilson, Mrs Hanan, Misses K. Cutt, L. Mehaffey, I. Henderson and J. Kelly. The match will be played at Waihopai courts commencing at 10.30 a.m. Mixed doubles will be played in the morning and singles and doubles in the afternoon. . AUCKLAND LEADING CANTERBURY ANTHONY WILDING SHIELD MATCH (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, February 18. A splendid first afternoon’s play in the Anthony Wilding Memorial Shield match between Canterbury and Auckland ended today with Auckland, the challenging team, gaining a lead of four matches to two. The visitors are, therefore, in a 'strong position for the beginning of the final day’s play, although the run of matches today suggests that the contest may yet be very close. A particularly encouraging sign for Canterbury is the splendid form shown by C. Angas in beating J. T. Mayson and a similar performance by him today will seriously threaten the supremacy of A. D. Brown, Auckland’s first man and the present New Zealand champion..
The beginning of play was delayed a little to enable the courts to dry out after overnight rain, but although a little slow they were not slippery and proved in splendid condition. The attendance of about 250 was less than expected, in view of the importance of the match. Following are the results, Auckland names being mentioned first: — SINGLES A. D. Brown beat H. A. Barnett, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. J. T. Mayson lost to C. Angas, 1-6, 1-6. N. G. Sturt beat A. R. Cant, 7-5, 6-4. J. W. Gunn beat H. Dymond, 10-8, 1-6, 6-4. DOUBLES Sturt and Gunn lost to Angas and Dymond, 5-7, 7-5, 1-6. Brown and Mayson beat Barnett and Cant, 6-3, 6-4. TOTALS Rubbers Sets Games
