ADDITIONAL CHARGE DROPPED
MAN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR MURDER (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, February 17. The police have decided not to proceed with a charge against Randall Reginald David Smith, who was sentenced to death for murder at Arundel, of obtaining goods by means of a valueless cheque. After being sentenced to death at Timaru for the murder of William Gaby at Arundel, Smith was brought before the Magistrate’s Court at Timaru last week on a charge of obtaining money and goods to the value of £8 16/7 at Seacliff on September 13— three days after the murder—by means of a valueless cheque. On the application of the police he was remanded, to appear at Christchurch today but ft was announced this morning that, in accordance with the request of the police, the Magistrate (Mr E. C. Lewey) had cancelled all further proceedings.
