STEPS TO PROHIBIT OFFENSIVE SMOKE
PROPOSAL OF AUCKLAND HARBOUR BOARD
(Special to The Times)
AUCKLAND, February 15.
A by-law that every vessel using the port should effectively prevent the emission of smoke that is either- dangerous to health or offensive is to be introduced by the Auckland Harbour Board as a result of a recommendation to the board by the superintendent (Mr D. Holderness). Members also criticized the Railway Department for causing a smoke nuisance. Mr C. G. Macindoe said he wished members could take the matter further. For years the city had been forced to contend with huge volumes of annoying smoke issued by railway .trains. It was a definite nuisance and the Railway Department should abolish it. .The chairman (the Hon. T. Bloodworth) said 'that probably if the board set an example the Railway Department and other bodies would follow the lead given.
