NIGHTCAPS

MEETING OF FARMERS’ UNION PROTEST AGAINST RISE IN COSTS At a meeting of the Nightcaps branch of the Farmers’ Union there were present: Messrs C. Speight (Ohai), president, P. Sinclair (Opio), secretary, G. Taylor (Wairio), J. J. Crampton (Opio), J. Ronald (Nightcaps), J. Pilgrim (Nightcaps), J. A. Beck (Wairio), A. Ellis (Beaumont) and J. Ayton (Wairio). Following representations from the branch to the Ohai Railway Board that repairs be made to the overhead bridge on the Ohai-Nightcaps road, the board replied as follows: “That alterations to the bridge have been under consideration, for some time and the work will be carried out as soon as negotiations, in progress, have been completed.” The branch was advised that the wages for harvesting, under the latest award, would be 2/2 ah hour. The president said that a committee had been set up to frame a protest stating that in face of falling prices there was a tremendous increase in production costs. It was also considered that the 40-hour week was in many cases unreasonable, uneconomic and unworkable. It was decided to adhere to the previous resolution that there should be no lifting of the live-stock embargo. Mr J. J. Crampton reported to the meeting on inquiries made about the importation of oats from Australia. The branch decided to make a further protest against the importation of Australian oats.

CLAIM FOR SEALED FOOTPATHS After a deputation of ratepayers of Morley Village had waited on the Nightcaps Town Board putting forward claims for tar sealed footpaths, members of the board inspected the locality. The major portion of the footpath from the bridge to Dixon’s corner was considered by the board to require further formation and it was decided to leave the tarsealing of this portion stand over in the meantime. The footpath is to be tarsealed from the bridge to the letter box almost immediately. CYCLING AND RUNNING TRACK A deputation consisting of Messrs A. J. Brown, A. Pointon and John Duncan, representing the Nightcaps Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, waited on the Town Board requesting permission to form a 440 yards running and cycling track on the children’s playing area reserve. The reserve is being levelled and, it is stated, would make an ideal site for an athletic circuit. The board was sympathetic towards the deputation’s request and the Athletic Club, will, following a meeting of members proceed with the preparation of plans. TAR-SEALING FOOTPATHS A start has been made with the ac-

tual tar-sealing of selected footpaths, within the Nightcaps town board district. SCHOOL SWIMMING Taking advantage of the warm weather and working to a summer timetable, pupils of the three Nightcaps schools have been given a good deal of instruction in swimming and life saving. Before the construction of the pool, facilities for swimming or bathing were very poor and the river was five miles away. It is considered by many that swimming instruction should be included in the school curriculum. Next Wednesday the combined schools carnival will take place. Certificates have been allotted to the following pupils, for having swum the distances shown:—22oo yards, I. Robertson; 1760 yards, Arthur Tinker, Melda Klemick, Mona Erassmussen, Mary Foster, Helen Morris, Jack Prendeville and Dorothy Tinker; 900 yards, Jack Grant; 450 yards, Valerie Berry, Joyce White, Valmai Lowe, Shirley Mason, Carlev Foster, Weston Grant and Margaret Excell; 220 yards, Pat Booth, Melda Laidlaw; learners’ 150 yards, Elaine Tinker, George Hedley, Lorraine Hunt, Ken Barnsfield, Joey Kennedy, Jack Erasmussen, Tudor Bokser, Frank Boyle, Roger Berry, Ray Dixon, Thelma Barnsfield, Wilma Rushton, Ernest Braithwaite, Dorry Mason, Anne Klemick, Irene Neglon and Margaret Prendeville.
