Mrs D. G. Stark and Mrs Ken Clark are spending a holiday at Riverton. Miss N. Findlay has returned to Oreti after spending a holiday at Pukemaon. Mrs G. J. Yule, Spey street, returns tomorrow from a visit to Timaru.

Mrs J. K. Clark, Lewis street, left yesterday on a visit to Wellington. Mrs S. E. Wootton, Grace strret, has left to spend a holiday in England.

Mrs Mowat Ussher, Huron street, Gore, has returned from a holiday m Christchurch.

Mrs M. Simmonds, Scandrett street, has returned from a tour of the North and South Islands.

Miss Joyce Moen has been appointed to the position of shorthand typist in the town clerk’s department. Mrs Rodan Thomson and Miss Lorna Thomson, Dalrymple street, return today from a visit to Dunedin. Mrs M. Hawke, Janet street, who is at present visiting Dunedin, leaves shortly on a holiday visit to England.

Mrs H. J. Bennett, wife of SurgeonLieutenant H. J. Bennett, R.N., of H.M.S. Leith, is a guest at the Club Hotel, Bluff. Mrs J. Robertson, Lewis street, was hostess at an initial party last evening in honour of Miss Beth Thomson, who leaves shortly for a holiday in England.

Miss Beth Hoyles, Herbert street, returned last evening from a holiday spent in Sydney. She was accompanied by Miss Bertine Hogg, of Wellington.

Mrs R. N. Todd, Avenal, and Mrs A. G. Ford, Elgin street, returned last evening from Dunedin, where they attended the divisional meeting of the New Zealand National Party.

The engagement is announced of Isabel, daughter of Mr and Mrs L. W. Spencer, Albert street, Gladstone, to Francis Wheatly, son of Mr and Mrs Rodger Patrick, Hamilton, Scotland. Mr and Mrs Orr, St. Andrew’s street, Mr and Mrs R. Donnely, Wairio, Mrs G. Greer, Balfour, Mr and Mrs G. Stewart and Miss Rebecca West, Waikiwi, have been the guests of Mrs K. L. Greer, Hollyford Valley.

Yesterday evening Mrs J. G. Macdonald, Don street, entertained the members of the Garden Circle of the Southland Women’s Club at afternoon tea. She took the opportunity of welcoming home Miss O. Rein, who had returned from a holiday in England, and also of farewelling Mrs J. W. McArthur, a valuable committee member who is leaving to reside in Otago.

BLUFF Miss Mavis Wares, Spencer street, spent lajt week-end in Dunedin. Mrs W. B. Dixon and Miss Molly Dixon, Bann street, have returned from a holiday spent at Hanmer Springs, Canterbury. Miss Hilda Smith, Spencer street, is a passenger by the Maunganui, , and will take a position at the Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital, Mint Place, Melbourne. Last Saturday evening Mrs W. F. Cameron, Bann street, was hostess at bridge, in honour of her guest, Miss Coxhead. On Saturday Miss Edna 'Lopdell, Foyle street, was hostess at a pantry afternoon in honour of Miss Gwladys Williams. The room was beautifully decorated with bowls of giant tangerine dahlias. During the afternoon songs were contributed by Mrs Wilson and Mrs J. Walker. Competitions were won by Mrs E. Parsons, Mrs J. Walker and Mrs G. Hicks. Mr E. A. Gowring and Miss Gowring, England, returned from Stewart Island on Saturday and spent the week-end at the Bay View Hotel, before leaving for a tour of the Lakes district. ' TUATAPERE A masked fancy dress ball was held in the Clifden hall on Friday last in aid of the tennis funds. The hall was decorated with coloured streamers and Chinese lanterns. The prize for the best costumes was won by Miss WallScott (Russian dancer) and Miss W. Rowley (gipsy). The prizes for the most original costumes were won by Misses B. Rowley and G. Bates (bride and bridegroom). A novelty dance was won by Miss Bennett (Orepuki) and Mr Houlihan. Music was supplied by Messrs H. Ackers and G. Spain, and Mr R. Erwin was master of ceremonies.

COMING-OF-AGE PARTY

Mr and Mrs A. Boulter, of Rowallan, entertained a number of guests at a social evening and dance in the in honour of the coming-of-age of their youngest son Peter. Mrs Blair opened the evening with a Maori greeting to the guest of honour, and Mr and Mrs A. Boulter led the grand march. Mr L. Butterfield was M.C. The music was supplied by Messrs Carrol, Acker, Rodgers and Wells. Mr C. Acker, who was chairman, spoke of the good qualities of the Boulter family, and presented the numerous presents to the guest of the evening. He then called on Mr A. Boulter to present the key of the door, to which Mr Peter Boulter replied, and thanked Mr Acker, sen., for his kind remarks and those present for their good wishes and presents. He was given musical honours for his speech. Supper was served, then the birthday cake with twenty-one candles was lit and cut. The cake was the gift of his godmother. Between dances items were given by Mrs Wixon, Mr Duff, Mrs Blair, Mrs Wixon, Master Wixon, Mr P. Boulter and Mr G. Boulter. The evening was brought to a close . with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
