THE SANDERS CUP CONTEST
LAVINA TO REPRESENT SOUTHLAND CREW LIGHTER THAN IN PAST YEARS Declaring that the crew was most dependable and considerably lighter in weight than in past years, Mr F. J. Biggs, chairman of the Southland Provincial Yacht and Motor-Boat Association stated at a meeting of the association last evening that the chances of the Lavina, which was the boat chosen to represent Southland in the Sanders Cup contest at Dunedin on January 27, were extremely good. “The boat should have every chance of success,” he said. “The crew of our boat last year was five stone _ heavier than the heaviest crew competing, but this year it is of only the average weight.” The cost of sending the boat and crew to the contest was estimated at about £25, it was stated. As this was more than the association’s finances could meet at present, the association would have to depend upon the public’s support to a certain extent. Delegates appointed to represent the association on the Sanders Cup Memorial Contest Committee were Messrs F. J. Biggs and T. Bragg. Mr Bragg was elected manager of the crew of the Lavina.
Mr J. R. Colbran (Fortrose) said that it was maintained by his club that the additional trials for the contest, which were held op the Sunday after the Bluff regatta, were unofficial as they were not run with the permission of the association.
Ilie chairman explained that judges of the association were present at the trials and he considered that the proceedings were quite in order. The trials were then ruled as official.
The crew of the Lavina consists of the following:—George Bragg (skipper), A. Marshall (for’ard hand), C. Topi (third man) and L. Bragg (mainsheet hand).
