NATIONAL BOWLS TOURNAMENT

First Day Of Rinks Play NO GREAT SURPRISES IN FIRST ROUND LAST YEAR’S WINNING SKIP BEATEN (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 14. Fine weather and fast greens were the conditions under which the New Zealand bowling tournament was confined on 12 Dunedin greens today. It Was the first day of the rinks championship, for which 124 combinations had entered. The day’s programme comprised two rounds, each of 25 heads. There were no great surprises in the first round, although the rink skipped by R. Haworth (Canterbury), who was the winning skip last year and also in 1936, was fully extended to beat A. E. Hodges’s Awamoa rink by 18 points to 17. In the afternoon round, however, there was some big scoring. The West End (Timaru) rink skipped by C. J. Dewar beat J. Coulter’s North East Valley rink by 42 points to 11 and H. Watts (Victoria) skipped a rink which won by 40 points to 15 from an Ashburton rink skipped by E. A. Cockroft. The third unusually big win of the afternoon was scored by T. E. Sunderland’s Alexandra rink, which beat J. J. Read’s Anderson’s Bay rink by 41 points to 28. Both Dewar and Watts, however, lost their first round games: The main surprise of the afternoon was the defeat of Haworth s rink. It was only one player different from that with which, the Canterbury skip won last year, but it was beaten by 33 points to 16 by H. D. Campbell s Kaituna rink. Sectional play in the rinks competition will be continued for three more days. Results:— SECTION A First Round Holmes, Brass, Thomson, A. E. Gardner (Southland) 25 beat Ogg, Foster, Bentley, W. T.
