SUBSTANTIAL OFFERS TO BUDGE

PROMOTERS BID FOR SERVICES (Received January 14, 9.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 13. The Daily News states that Donald Budge has received two bids if he turns professional. The sports promoter, Mr James Johnston, has offered him 65,000 dollars, while Mr William O’Brien cabled a 75,000 dollar offer, including a four months’ tour starting in January 1939, contingerffi upon Budge’s retention of top ranking honours in the ensuing season.

A message published on Thursday stated that Mr James Johnston, the sporting promoter, revealed that he was negotiating with J. D. Budge, the leading amateur tennis player, to turn professional. He said he had cabled an offer to Budge and received the following reply: “Offer sounds good. I should like to hear more on my return to the United States on March 1.” Mr Johnston refused to divulge the nature of the offer.
