! Stretching Exercises

(By DONALD LOOMIS) All of us need stretching exercises. They are the best of all means for toning up the muscles and streamlining the torso. They are very good for the back and ten or fifteen minutes’ stretching will give you a new outlook on life after a hard day at an office desk, a sewing machine or any confining occupation.

Start with arms high overhead, hands clasped. Bring your body down gradually, twisting the trunk and arms from side to side as you lower them; first try to reach up as high as possible, then bring the arms down against resistance as low as you can reach. Besides relaxing you all over, this exercise is good for that bulge at the waistline.

Recently Robert Montgomery came in complaining that his waist measurement was increasing. I used bending and twisting exercises to help him overcome this condition. He also tried setting up exercises with a weight behind his neck. In this way he developed his arms, chest and shoulders. Women, however, do not need strenuous workouts. Often, if they are underweight, careful diet, stretching exercises and building up routines fill their requirements. Sunbaths are excellent for certain people. If you have lots of pigment in your skin they will benefit you, but if you have little or none, they are likely to harm you. People with white skin and closed pores should stay out of hot sunshine, or protect themselves when they are in it. The dark-complexioned girl with naturally open pores can enjoy it, if she takes reasonable care.

GOLD KID

In a few cases, a naturally fair person can work olive oil into her skin so that she can acquire a good suntan without harm, but as a rule it is better not to try. On the other hand, sun is essential to some people. When you begin taking sunbaths, lie for fifteen minutes on each side—-that is, if you are spending your time simply lying on the beach; if you are running in and out of the water, you can spend three-quarters of an hour in the sun the first morning, gradually increasing the time. Use olive oil or coconut oil liberally before going out.

Here are some stretching exercises you can do before you get up in the morning or before you go to sleep at night: Lie flat on the back on the bed, with legs hanging down over the edge, arms clasped back of the head; stretch your legs outward as far as they will go, pointing the toes as if you were a toedancer; then stretch the legs downward in the same manner, then upward, then outward again. And relax. Repeat this, but this time stretch the arms up as far as they will go and rotate the head from side to side. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water; eight glasses a day is not too much. Get into the habit of drinking two glasses before breakfast.

Smart Parisiennes are wearing gold kid accessories with evening dress. All along the Rue Fauborg St. Honore exclusive little shops are showing sets in gold kid which include dancing sandals, long gloves, a handbag, a shoulder spray, a belt and a hair band. Paris obviously believes in gilding the lily.
