TEMPORARY LULL IN SHIPPING

ONE VESSEL EXPECTED AT BLUFF TODAY With the departure just before midday yesterday of the Port Line’s vessel Port Campbell, which has been at Bluff since last Friday, the wharves were deserted. Since last Saturday there have been several overseas and coastal vessels discharging and loading at the port and, except for one or two heavy showers, the weather has been favourable for waterside workers and shipping agents. The wharves presented a strange contrast yesterday with only small fishing boats and launches to be seen. There was bustle no longer and most of the men will have a spell before Monday, when four ships are expected to berth. The vessels to be in port on that day are the Union Steam Ship Company’s trans-Tasman liner Maunganui, from Wellington, the intercolonial trader Karetu, from Lyttelton, and the coastal trading vessel Waipahi, from Wellington, and the Canterbury Shipping Company’s Breeze, also from Wellington. All of these ships, however, with the exception of the Maunganui, are expected to sail the same day for northern ports and the port will be quiet again for several days. 'the only vessel to arrive before Monday will be the Union Company’s coastal trader Waimarino, from Dunedin, which is due early today. She is expected to sail in the evening for Dunedin, however, and so there will be no activity over the week-end.
