WOMAN RESCUED IN HARBOUR
PASSENGER LEAPS FROM FERRY (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 13. A thrilling rescue well out in the harbour this morning was watched by a crowd of passengers on the ferry steamer MuritaL The hero was a resident of Eastbourne, Mr Max Hill, who showed great courage and alertness of mind in leaping from the ferry to save a woman passenger. The steamer left Rona Bay at 8.5 o’clock and 10 minutes later when nearing Ward Island the master received the alarm of “passenger overboard.” He immediately stopped the engine* and those on board could see a person in the water about 400 yards away and another person swimming to the rescue. The ferry put about and a boat was manned and lowered. By this time Mr Hill had reached the woman, who, it appeared, had floated on her back for some time, and he was supporting her when the boat reached them. After they got into the boat the Muritai towed it back to Eastbourne.
The woman, who is also a resident of Eastbourne, was travelling with her husband and small son. She appeared to be fairly exhausted.
