SOUTHLAND PAIRS FOR TODAY SURPRISE ELIMINATION OF KEAST AND URE (Special to The Times) DUNEDIN, January 12. Contrary to expectations. Southland’s representation in the post-section play of the New Zealand pairs bowls championship will be a small one in number. Some strong combinations were eliminated today but Southland, which had 20 pairs engaged was not the only sufferer. Other strong pairs also failed to score the requisite number of wins to qualify and tomorrow will be among those on the bank. Although small the representation from Southland should be equal to some of the opposition yet to be met. McKitterick and Smith (Northend) played so well today that they must be given a good chance of getting among the last 10 or so. They won their first three games today and dropped the fourth to a pair which previously had not won a game. This loss made no difference, as McKitterick and Smith had qualified when they won three games. Their fourth was lost to Foulkes and Templeton (Ranfurly). Two other Northend pairs also qualified, C. J. McEachran and D. J. Wesney, and A. C. Millar and J. A. Wesney, and although neither appeals as much as McKitterick and Smith, it is possible that either will win important games in the post-section play tomorrow.

The other Southland pair left in comes from the Gore Club, Murray and Taylor.

The greens were in good order, but heavy for the morning games. Later, however, the warm sun had a good effect and surfaces were keen. On all of the southern greens a high wind made conditions difficult in the afternoon.

The surprise of the day as far as the Southland contingent was concerned, was the elimination of the Northend pair, Feast and Ure, who won their morning games comfortably. After lunch they failed to reproduce form and went down to moderate pairs, neither of which qualified. Their elimination was definite when Keast and Ure lost to McKenzie and Langley (Sydenham) in the fourth game, the latter pair having been beaten in all previous games by big margins. The Northend pair required to win this game to qualify, but failed dismally although they recovered from a bad position by scoring eight points on the last two ends when nine were wanted to tie.

Edwards (Temuka) qualified and continued the good form which has given him a prominent place in the singles. A strong pair is the one from Matai (Nelson), comprising Batcheler and Piper.
