CRAFT SIGHTED FROM LAUNCH
Captain Saw 7 “Large Object” UNAWARE THAT CLIPPER WAS MISSING (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 13. The Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department said at midnight that a report had been received at Apia from the captain of a launch that Had arrived from “down the coast” that he had sighted a large object resembling the Samoan Clipper, but had taken no notice of it, not knowing at the time that it was missing. There had been no corroboration of the report but an endeavour was being made to divert the search ships in that direction. The position in which the captain had seen the object had not been communicated to New Zealand. The vessels engaged in the search from Apia were local craft. The Administrator’s launch at Apia had been fitted with radio equipment and had been sent out to assist in the search.
