SUCCESSFUL PICNIC RESIDENTS OF WYNDHAM RIDGES Favoured with beautifully fine weather, the annual picnic organized by the residents of the Wyndham Ridges was successful. There was a big attendance. After lunch games were played and a sports programme was held. The detailed results of the various events are as follows: —

VITAL STATISTICS The vital statistics for the Wyndham district for the month of December, 1937, and those for the corresponding month of 1936 are as follows: — 1936 1937 Births 3 2 Deaths 3 1 Marriages 22 For the year ended December 31, 1937, and the year ended December 31, 1936, the figures were as follows:— 1936 1937 Births 52 35 Deaths 18 19 Marriages 16 18 BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIP After several rounds of matches, play in the championship doubles of the Bowling Club has reached a most interesting stage, the issue being between three strong pairs in A. A. Wilson and H. Hunter, E. J. Traynor and N. W. Stark and T. W. Burstall and W. F. Bennetto. With two lives, Wilson and Hunter are considered to have the best chance both the other pairs being one-lifers. .Traynor and Stark will play Burstall and Bennetto this week, and the winner will meet Wilson and Hunter in the final. There is still a number of games to be played in the championship singles. The sections of the handicap singles are nearly completed. In section 1, C. E. Davey (8) still maintains the toad with four wins and two losses, and in the second section three players have the same number of points. They are N. W. Stark (scr), who has had four wins, T, W. Burstall (4) with four wins and two losses, and G. D. Bogue (6), also with four wins and two losses. As he has not yet suffered a loss, Stark is expected to be the section winner. Two wins and one loss give T. K. Clarke and G. C. Kerse (scr) a lead in section 1 of the handicap doubles event and in the other section the leaders are G. D. Bogue and E. J. Traynor (2), with two wins and a loss. There were four entrants for the colts’ singles championship, which was completed last week, the winner being O. Traynor, who won all his games.

OLD HOTEL TO BE DEMOLISHED The old Farmers’ Club hotel, which has been a prominent landmark in Wyndham for many years, is being demolished, Mr R. D. Senior, of Invercargill, supervising the work. It is several years now since the hotel was occupied as a hostelry, but ’until recently it was used as a private residence. PERSONAL Mrs John T. Mitchell, Balaclava street, Wyndham, is spending a holiday at Queenstown. Miss Leila Rice, Alma street, Wyndham has returned home after a short stay at Stewart Island. A guest of Mrs T. M. Strang, Crimea street, Wyndham, is Mrs Lex Strang, of Gore. Visitors from Masterton to Wyndham include Mrs Dillon and Mr Victor Dillon. Mrs A. A. Wilson, sen., of Dunedin, is the guest of Mr and Mrs A. A. Wilson, Ferry street, Wyndham. Miss Janet Leckie, of Redan, leaves next Tuesday by train for Wellington, and later for Sydney by the Wanganella. She will be accompanied by Mr and Mrs James G. Leckie and their small daughter. Mr Leckie is a member of the New Zealand athletic team which will compete at the Empire Games.
