W. COSGROVE’S TREBLE
Voloma’s Impressive Win MANY HIGH-CLASS PERFORMANCES INCREASED TOTE AND GATE RETURNS Bright sunshine favoured the annual fixture of the Winton Trotting Club yesterday and the attendance was one of the largest for several years. The gate takings showed an increase of £124 over last year’s figures, the totals being £438 18/- as against £314 11/6. The racing was of a much higher standard than has been seen for some time and in the principal races as well as the minor events local candidates held too many guns for the Canterbury visitors. The totalizator figures showed an increase of £3052, this year’s total being £13,398 10/- as against £10,346 10/- last year. A feature of the day’s racing was the success of the Winton trainer, W. Cosgrove, who won three events during the afternoon with Voloma, Waitemata and Vice Regal. Cosgrove won both novice races at Gore on Boxing Day and repeated this performance yesterday. Of nine maiden races decided in Southland this season Cosgrove has won no fewer than three. Voloma’s winning performance was one of the most impressive of the day and, while she is little more than a pony she has inherited all the speed of a maternal line which has achieved great success in Southland and Canterbury in recent seasons. The victory of Carver Doone in the Winton Cup was the most popular of the day. Racing in the livery of his breeder, Mr W. Norman, of Forest Hill, Carver Doone accounted for a strong field in decisive style and on this display looks certain to win further honours as a stayer. Carver Doone (by Drusus, a sire whose stock have not been a great success in Southland) is out of Misfortune, the dam of a host of winners including Nelson’s Victory and Erin’s Fortune, both of which had records of 2min lOsec. It is rather an interesting fact that another winner during the afternoon in Waitemata, claims as her dam, Fortune Chimes, a half-sister by Four Chimes to Carver Doone. Embark’s sprint success was a decisive one and he paid a surprisingly good price as he had been placed in tile Cup race earlier in the day. STARTER COMMENDED The starter, Mr F. Legat, made a great success of this work and his despatches were made with a minimum of delay. Very few horses lost their chances at the start and there was good reason to appreciate the high standard of work in this department. It was unfortunate for supporters of Bing Crosby in the Winton Cup, as well as his owner and trainer, that he should have been facing the wrong way when the signal was given. Bing Crosby took no part in the race. He refused to line up and the field was standing in perfect line when the signal was given. Bing Crosby held up the start of the Gore Cup for some time, but was not given the opportunity to do so yesterday. If other starters would give fractious horses as little consideration as was given Bing Crosby yesterday it would be much better for the sport. The meeting was smoothly conducted and the final event was run shortly after scheduled time. Mr H. A. Pierce had charge of the secretarial duties, and he and the president, Mr J. O’Shannessy, at the head of an enthusiastic band of honorary officials, were responsible in no small measure for the events being run off with a minimum of delay. After the finish of the Winton Trotting Club Handicap Mr W. Norman, owner of the winner, Carver Doone, was presented with the trophy by the president of the club, Mr O’Shannessy. Mr O’Shannessy complimented Mr Norman on his success and said that Mr Norman had proved that Southland horses could hold their own'with allcomers. Mr Norman replied and cheers were given by the big crowd of interested spectators. Results were:
