KENNEL NOTES

(By

RETRIEVER)

Field trial enthusiasts are reminded of the trials to be held at Tuatapere on New Year’s Day. There is a novice retrieve and two open classes; three dogs on mark and double retrieve. The trials are scheduled to start at 1.30 p.m. The holiday season is here and in most cases the family dog must be taken too. This usually means travelling and some dogs are good travellers, but others are not. By taking a few precautions owners can improve the journey for their dogs to a great extent. A dog should be fed fully an hour before the start of a journey, and then allowed a run about. The dog should always face forwards and should be given a run and drink whenever possible. Do not fuss him if he begins to yawn, as | this is a certain sign he is travel sick. It is better to withhold food until the end of the day. In most cases it is advisable to send the dog by rail. He should be fed two hours before the beginning of the journey, and given a good run. He should then be fastened in some strong wellventilated box, with air holes planed smooth on the inside. The box should be big enough for the dog to stand up and turn around. When taken by car the dog should be properly controlled at camping places so as not to interfere with farmers and stock owners.--' A good supply of clean drinking water at all times is a necessity; exercise the dog regularly but not in the midday heat, and keep his surroundings clean to keep the flies away. The following recipe is declared to be effective for skin disorders in dqgs:— Boil together 11b lard, lib petroleum jelly, J pint castor oil; remove from fire and add 1 pint kerosene. Boil up again to ensure thorough mixing. After cooling off add enough sulphur to produce a thin paste. Apply with the hands, rubbing into the skin. Treat every part of the dog thoroughly. One application is usually enough, but any spots may be treated again in about four days.
