PLUNKET SHIELD CRICKET
Otago Begins Second Innings UTTLEY BATS SOUNDLY (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, December 28. There was again little bright cricket in the second day’s play in the Plunket Shield game between Canterbury and Otago at Lancaster Park today. When Canterbury continued its innings which was postponed yesterday because of rain, the pitch was soft and the outfield slow, the Canterbury batsmen playing the bowling of Dunning and Elmes carefully and quietly. These two bowled almost unchanged throughout the innings. Menzies and Stokes, the not out batsmen, carried Canterbury’s first day s score of 58 for two wickets to 105 before the former was caught and bowled by Dunning for 49. Stokes was quietly confident and took no risks, scoring steadily with well-placed shots. The brightest moments of the innings were provided by Hadlee, who batted freely and aggressively. The best bowler was Dunning, who bowled unchanged from one end 33.6 overs for six wickets, costing only 51 runs. In its second innings Otago lost one wicket for 105 runs, Uttley (74 not out) batting soundly and scoring steadily with crisp, hard-hit strokes. BRABIN CUP WON BY WELLINGTON AUCKLAND JUNIOR TEAM BEATEN (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 28. By defeating Auckland by 70 runs on the first innings, Wellington regained the Brabin Cup, which Auckland had held for the past two years. The annual contest is confined to players in the Wellington and Auckland provinces who are under 21 years of age. The match began yesterday, when Auckland scored 259 and Wellington 225 for the loss of three wickets. Resuming in fine weather today Wellington carried its total to 329, a feature of the innings being, a splendid stand by A. Thompson and A. du Feu, which put on 181 for the fourth wicket. A splendid bowling performance was put up for Auckland by K. S. Arkenstall, an Auckland Grammar School boy, who took eight wickets for- 60 runs off 83 deliveries. Auckland in its second innings ran up 246 for nine wickets and applied the closure at the tea adjournment, which left Wellington 177 runs to win and 105 minutes in which td get them. In an exciting race against time Wellington just failed by four runs to secure an outright win. The form shown by the junior representatives during the two days was brighter than anything which has been seen at the Basin Reserve this season. In two days’ play 1007 runs were scored for the loss of 35 wickets and runs were made in a finished style. The bowling, fielding and wicketkeeping also was on a high plane and it is evident that both Auckland and Wellington have some very able young players coming along to their mark In the game. DOUBLE CENTURY SCORED (United Press Association) WANGANUI, December 28. Hook made 204 runs in an hour and a-half in Wanganui’s second innings. His first century was compiled in 75 minutes and his total included 27 4’s and five 6’s.
